Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s next big project will be the launch of Junkyard Joe, a special edition comic book created to benefit veterans. This unique one-shot will feature a black and white variant cover by Gary Frank. It will be available for purchase on October 5th.
Giving Back to Those Who Served
“My grandfather served during World War II and it changed his life forever,” Johns said according to CBR.com. “Junkyard Joe felt like an opportunity to raise not only visibility for these two amazing veteran organizations, but real financial support. It’s an honor to be working with the NCHV and VA.” 2022 marks the 90th anniversary of Veteran's Aid.
Proceeds of the first comic will go to benefit the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) and the Department of Veteran Affairs' Veterans Health Administration's Continuum of Care. The NCHV is the oldest and largest organization devoted solely to ending homelessness among veterans.
In addition, Mad Ghost productions will donate $2 of every comic sold.
Mad Ghost's Geiger Universe
Mad Ghost Productions was founded in 2018 with the mission to create entertaining content across all platforms that are both inclusive and impactful. Junkyard Joe will be the company’s first comic book release. The goal is to raise awareness and funds for veteran organizations while providing an enjoyable comic book experience.
The shift to black and white for the special release helps focus on the storyline and the characters' experiences. Readers can color it in with their own emotions and thoughts, and it is also an opportunity for a collectible edition that goes for a great cause.
The black and white artwork of Junkyard Joe amplifies the story's emotional impact. The art style is evocative of Frank Miller's Sin City, and it helps bring to life the post-apocalyptic world of Geiger. Junkyard Joe focuses on a group of heroes called The Unnamed. It is part of the larger Mad Ghost Production universe called Geiger. Geiger is a post-apocalyptic world where mutants, robots, and mad science rule the day. In Junkyard Joe, The Unnamed is a group of survivors who have banded together to find a new home in the ruins of the old world.
The plot of Junkyard Joe shows the world through the perspective of a veteran. This robot soldier is on a mission to meet the cartoonist who created him. The journey is emotional, as the veteran realizes that he is not alone in his experience.
